We recommend training your pet to allow you to brush their teeth daily since they are very young, before they accumulate dental calculus. Tooth brushing can be very painful once pets have dental calculus or inflamed gums. Veterinarians recommend dental cleanings when pets have dental calculus, inflamed gums, or bad breath.&nbsp;Unlike people, tooth caries are not common in pets. However dental infections are very common. Dental calculus or tartar is an accumulation of bacteria that cause harm to your pet’s oral health. These bacteria destroy the bones surrounding the teeth. Bone destruction causes the teeth to fall. Families often assume that their senior pet’s teeth fall due to old age when in reality they fall due to painful infections.&nbsp;<h2 style="margin-left:1.3420028686523438pt;">¿What are dental cleanings?&nbsp;</h2>During dental cleanings pets are anesthetized under general anesthesia in order to take full oral radiographs and be able to do surgical extractions when needed. Oral radiographs allow veterinarians to evaluate the roots of teeth which is where most painful infections occur. Pets also get full ultrasonic scaling and polishing, cleaning off all the dental calculus.&nbsp;Groomers and few veterinarians offer non-anesthetic teeth cleanings. We do not recommend these procedures since it is only aesthetic and does not improve a pet's oral health. Teeth roots cannot be evaluated during non-anesthetic cleaning. Removing tartar when pets are fully awake can also be uncomfortable and painful. I often find patients with bad breath who do not have dental calculus. Most of those patients have non-anesthetic cleanings which means that the outside of the teeth are clean but the inside can be very painful and infected. Doing non-anesthetic teeth cleaning is similar to painting a car without fixing the engine.&nbsp;<h2 style="margin-left:0.6270065307617188pt;">What can happen if my pet does not get dental cleanings?</h2>With time pets will accumulate dental calculus, have pain, bad breath and develop abscesses, fistulas, falling of teeth and even mandibular fractures. Tooth pain is usually chronic pain which makes most families not notice that their pets are uncomfortable. After extractions of these painful teeth pets are more comfortable and families notice an improvement in their appetite and even energy levels!&nbsp;<h2 style="margin-left:1.375pt;">How often do you recommend doing dental cleanings?&nbsp;</h2>The frequency of dental cleanings depends on the amount of dental calculus that your pet accumulates. Generally small breeds will have more dental calculus since their teeth are very large compared to the small size of their mouths. Many small dogs such as Yorkshire Terriers or French Poodles need annual dental cleanings. Cats suffer often from inflammation of their gums which improves with cleanings. Ask your veterinarian about the frequency that they recommend for dental cleanings for your pet. The best way to avoid dental cleanings is daily tooth brushing since they are young. &nbsp;

A hot summer day and you are eating a delicious ice cream and you aren’t sure if you can share it with your dog, or your dog ate the ice cream from the table, or you are about to buy a special ice cream for dogs. We will explain different situations and general recommendations such as the safe flavors, and what to do if your dog feels sick after eating ice cream.&nbsp;Generally it is best to avoid giving dairy products to dogs. Puppies can digest milk, but after being weaned from their mother's milk dogs no longer digest milk as well.&nbsp;Ice creams contain large amounts of sugar which can lead to obesity. Giving your dog ice cream can make it even more difficult to help him lose those extra pounds. The worst thing about ice cream is that ice cream has a lot of fat.&nbsp;Small sudden changes in the fat content of your dog's diet can cause health problems. Many dogs get an upset stomach because their owners have changed the amount of fat in their diets. These problems can appear the same day or even several days later.&nbsp;The most common effects of eating ice cream are abdominal pain, gas, diarrhea, vomiting, and decreased appetite. Symptoms can be mild, such as throwing up once and not eating their entire meal. In mild cases of stomach upset you can offer your dog his usual food or add boiled rice/chicken without seasonings or oils. Some pets have more serious effects, such as continuous vomiting, diarrhea and not eating at all, which can lead to severe dehydration. In severe cases it is best to visit your veterinarian where they will likely perform laboratory tests, such as blood tests.&nbsp;Vanilla flavor is the safest option compared to other flavors for your dog. There are very dangerous flavors such as chocolate, coffee, raisins and any "light, diet or sugar free" flavors with artificial sweeteners. With this in mind, your dog can try dog-specific ice creams, just be sure to start with small amounts. If you have a dog with a very sensitive stomach, do not give him ice cream. If your pet does not suffer from stomach upset, you can offer him a little vanilla ice cream...remember that a little bit for a small dog (like a chihuahua) is a tablespoon. A safer and healthier alternative to ice cream is to freeze healthy treats like frozen banana chunks.

Seizures are the most common neurological problems in pets. In this blog I am going to explain common causes, what to do when your pet has seizures and a little about treatments.&nbsp;A seizure is an episode where there are too many signals in the brain at the same time, it is as if the brain had an electrical short circuit. Pets have seizures in many ways, usually collapsing, trembling, pedaling their limbs, becoming rigid, and salivating. Some seizures are not so apparent as the pet may just appear disoriented. One thing that distinguishes seizures from other problems is that pets remain disoriented for a short time after the seizure.&nbsp;There are other conditions that look like seizures. Fainting, heart problems, and other neurological problems are commonly mistaken by families for seizures when they are not.&nbsp;There are many reasons why dogs and cats have seizures. These are some of the most common: epilepsy, toxins, infections (viruses, parasites, or bacteria), birth problems such as brain malformations, brain tumors, trauma such as strokes or accidents, and liver problems. The causes are ruled out using laboratory tests, and advanced imaging (MRI). The medical history also gives information about the possible causes. For example, when a pet seizes due to toxicity, it does so a short time after being in contact with the toxin and then does not get it again. When a pet begins to convulse when it is already an adult, one worries about possible tumors and cancer.&nbsp;If your dog has seizures, it is important to keep track of when they occur and the duration of each episode. When your pet is having a seizure, keep calm, make sure it is in a place where it cannot fall and that it is not under direct sunlight, keep other pets away, and do not try to wake it up or shake it. Take a video of your dog having a seizure so you can show it to your vet to confirm it is a seizure.&nbsp;The pet should be taken to a veterinarian when:<ul><li>It is his first seizure.&nbsp;</li><li>You have more than 2 seizures in a day.&nbsp;</li><li>The seizure lasts more than 5 minutes.</li></ul>Depending on where you live, there are a wide variety of safe medications available to treat seizures. If your pet is having seizures and it's becoming more frequent, I don't recommend trying to control the seizures with homeopathic medications alone. Proven medications that work and are commonly used are diazepam, phenobarbital, levetiracetam, zonisamide, gabapentin, among others. Treatments ideally reduce the frequency with which the pet has seizures. These treatments are long-term, lifelong, and should not be discontinued without first consulting with your veterinarian as seizures tend to worsen when medications are discontinued. The more seizures a pet has, the more likely it is to have another one, and it can be more difficult to control. That is, one seizure attracts more seizures. Usually seizures are not cured, they can only be controlled. On medications the pet will continue to have seizures but less frequently. Ask your veterinarian if they recommend that your pet be evaluated by a neurologist. &nbsp;

Many dogs and cats enjoy going to the vet as puppies but then as they get older they start to feel fear. Families often change veterinary clinics because they are worried that their pet had a bad experience because the pet starts shaking or being aggressive when they arrive at the clinic. &nbsp;Most pets who are afraid of the vet are afraid because of what they perceive as a negative experience in an unfamiliar place. When we think about the daily routine of pets, they have positive experiences when they go to the park, go for a walk, visit the doggy daycare, but the only place that is not always positive is visiting the veterinary hospital. Although the veterinarian is gentle, caring and affectionate with your pet, he might still perceive the interactions as a negative experience.&nbsp;&nbsp;Tips to help your fearful pet at the vet:&nbsp;<ul><li style="text-align:justify;">Make sure he's comfortable on the trip to the vet. If your puppy gets motion sickness in the car, talk to your doctor so they can prescribe medications.</li></ul>&nbsp;<ul><li style="text-align:justify;">&nbsp;If your dog is anxious, ask that you prefer to wait inside an exam room or outside of the clinic and not in the waiting room. This way you avoid loud noises and interactions with other pets.</li></ul>&nbsp;<ul><li style="text-align:justify;">Distract your pet during the exam. You can use cookies, peanut butter, cream cheese, and other yummy treats to calm him down.</li></ul>&nbsp;<ul><li style="text-align:justify;">If your dog is aggressive during visits, train him at home to use a muzzle and put it on before entering the clinic.</li></ul>&nbsp;<ul><li style="text-align:justify;">Teach your pet that he can have positive experiences at the clinic by taking him regularly only to say hello to the nurses, receptionists, and doctors while giving him cookies.</li></ul>&nbsp;Some pets are so anxious and fearful that they recommend sedating them at home before the visit. Talk to your vet about safe options for your pet. I recommend using medications that are proven to work rather than using natural options for situations as stressful as vet visits. Are your pets fearful during veterinary visits?

Mucus covering your dog’s poop can mean that they have an upset stomach. &nbsp;MAIN REASONS:&nbsp;&nbsp;Parasites, an unbalanced diet, changes in diet, inflammatory bowel disease, and other gastrointestinal problems can all cause mucus in your dog’s or cat’s poop. The most common cause for mucus in poop are changes in their diet such as new treats or abrupt transition of their regular food. &nbsp;An occasional mucus in their poop is not concerning, if it becomes constant then make sure to mention this to your veterinarian since it can be a sign of a health issue. If they are having constant mucus, mucus with blood, or soft poop you should bring your pet to the vet. Also make sure to take your pet to the vet if they have other abnormalities such as decreased appetite or vomiting. &nbsp;Adding fiber to their diet can help firm their stool and decrease the amount of mucus. Veterinarians often recommend adding psyllium husk, fiber cereals, canned pumpkin or prescription high-fiber diets. The best way to prevent mucus in your dog’s poop is to prevent the most common causes. If you are changing their diet make sure to slowly transition them to their new food, keep them on parasite prevention and do regular fecal parasite tests as recommended by your veterinarian. It is also important to feed your pet a well balanced diet to avoid other stomach problems. TIPS: - Avoid abrupt transition of diets, slowly add a new food flavor or brand to their daily diet. An easy way to do so is adding 1?4 cup of new food and 3?4 cups of previous food to the bowl for 3 days, then do 1?2 new and 1?2 previous food for 3 days, and then 3?4 new and 1?4 previous. Some pets are more sensitive and need an even longer transition of 5-7 days with each new step. - If your pet has a sensitive stomach avoid adding more than one type of new treat per week. This way you can notice changes in their stool or appetite. Signs of an upset stomach usually happen 1-2 days after trying a new treat.&nbsp;-Having a pet medical plan can be a great help to your pocket in case your furry friend needs it to prevent health problems.&nbsp;Your furry friend deserves it!&nbsp;

If your pet barks when a dog walks by the window then close the window shades when you are not home.&nbsp;– Leave the TV on or music to help distract them from outside sounds that can trigger barking. - Train them to be quiet on command. This can help to distract your pet from the cause of barking in a positive and rewarding way. - If your pet barks to get your attention such as asking for food or to go outside do not respond. Responding to barking reinforces the behavior. It is best to wait until they are quiet and then praise them and respond. - If your pet barks only when you are not home then we recommend contacting a trainer and veterinarian to address possible signs of separation anxiety. We do not recommend using a barking collar since all of them teach your dog to not bark by using negative reinforcement. Negative reinforcement is a punishment for when the pet barks.&nbsp;It has been proven that dogs learn best and have the most effective and long-lasting outcomes when they are rewarded for good behavior such as with positive reinforcement. If your adult pet did not bark and is now barking constantly, contact your veterinarian since barking in senior pets can be a sign of deafness. There are many reasons for barking and many resources and tools that we can use to avoid this common and often uncomfortable behavior.&nbsp;If your dog or puppy's barking is persistent and cannot be addressed through basic training techniques, you may want to consider seeking the help of a professional dog trainer or veterinarian. Every pet and travel conditions are different so make sure to inform your veterinarian your travel details so that they can recommend safe and appropriate sedatives.</li></ul>&nbsp;&nbsp;3. Train them to be comfortable when traveling.&nbsp;<ul><li style="text-align:justify;">Get them used to be in the car, kennel or travel bag. Take a video of your dog having a seizure so you can show it to your vet to confirm it is a seizure.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The pet should be taken to a veterinarian when:&nbsp;-It is his first seizure.&nbsp;-You have more than 2 seizures in a day.&nbsp;-The seizure lasts more than 5 minutes.&nbsp;&nbsp;Depending on where you live, there are a wide variety of safe medications available to treat seizures. If your pet is having seizures and it's becoming more frequent, I don't recommend trying to control the seizures with homeopathic medications alone. Proven medications that work and are commonly used are diazepam, phenobarbital, levetiracetam, zonisamide, gabapentin, among others. Treatments ideally reduce the frequency with which the pet has seizures.&nbsp;&nbsp;These treatments are long-term, lifelong, and should not be discontinued without first consulting with your veterinarian as seizures tend to worsen when medications are discontinued. The more seizures a pet has, the more likely it is to have another one, and it can be more difficult to control. That is, one seizure attracts more seizures. Heat can affect pets, especially those that have trouble breathing and short noses like Bulldogs and Shih Tzus. These dogs overheat more easily, and can collapse in hot weather. If your pet is brachycephalic (short muzzled with flattened face), avoid exercise during summer days.&nbsp;SYMPTOMS:&nbsp; Common symptoms of heat stroke are sudden tiredness, rapid breathing, collapse, changes in colors of their gums, and even seizures. Why should I take my healthy pet to the vet?

Pregnancy in our pets can be planned but most often come as a big surprise to the families. Dogs as young as 5 months old and cats as young as 4 months old can become pregnant! Often families do not realize that their young pets are in heat since the very first heat can have very subtle signs.&nbsp; Dogs go into heat every 6 months and cats usually have seasonal heats meaning that during certain times of the year they will go into heat frequently every few weeks and then do not go into heat during other seasons. The reason for being seasonal is that it is best for them to give birth to their kittens during warm months. The timing and frequency at which a cat will go into heat is variable on each individual and where they live.&nbsp; Dog pregnancies last around 63 days and cat pregnancies last on average 65 days. Early pregnancy can be diagnosed by veterinarians around 20 days after mating. Usually families find out that the pet is pregnant when the abdomen becomes rounder and they show enlarged nipples. Abdominal ultrasound can show kittens and puppies, depending on the litter size veterinarians can also palpate fetuses within the abdomen, there are also blood tests that can be performed to diagnose pregnancy.&nbsp;&nbsp;Most veterinarians will recommend a radiograph of the abdomen to see the skeletons of the fetuses, but these will only show at least 45 days after mating. These x rays can show an approximate number of fetuses which can help families know how many puppies or kittens to expect.
